Demonstrations held across Assam for not including six tribes in Centre’s ST list

Protests were held in Sibsagar. In different places effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were burnt.

Different organisations demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status on Thursday staged protests in different places of Assam after Centre approved granting ST status to 12 communities from different states.

Protests were held in Sibsagar. In different places effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were burnt.

Tai Ahoms, Morans, Mottocks, Chutias, Koch-Rajbongshis and Tea Tribes have long demanded ST status.


BJP prior to 2016 has promised ST status to six demanding communities. A cabinet subcommittee was constituted by the state government to look into the demands
