The transport department is developing a system where automated notifications will be sent to violators via SMS and WhatsApp, detailing the violation and payment process.
"The moment one clicks on the payment option on WhatsApp, they would be directed to a payment gateway with multiple options, including Bhim UPI," a senior official stated. The department recently presented this plan to WhatsApp officials.
They aim to roll out the new system within the next six months.

To support this initiative, the department has requested access to the challan database from echallan.parivahan.gov.in, managed by the National Informatics Centre. Once access is granted, the automated messages will include a link redirecting users to the e-challan website for payment.
The integration is expected to streamline the payment process. "Once a payment has been made through an app, push notifications would be sent every time a new challan is generated," the official added.
Initially, this system will cover transport-related challans, with potential expansion to traffic department fines based on feedback.
The transport department oversees pollution control and vehicle inspections, while the traffic department addresses signal and safety violations.
Officials believe the new system will boost government revenue, as some people avoid paying fines online or are unaware of outstanding challans. "Since WhatsApp has a push message feature, it will serve as a reminder for pending challans, similar to how banks and other services use it for overdue payments," the official explained.
Challans remain with the transport department for 60 days and can be paid via the website. Unpaid fines will then proceed to a virtual court for legal action.
