Delhi University has prohibited protests, demonstrations and public gatherings across its campuses for a period of one month, a move that has drawn sharp reactions from student and faculty groups who termed it “undemocratic” and an effort to stifle dissent.

The directive, issued by the office of the proctor, comes shortly after a protest on the North Campus on Friday against the Supreme Court’s stay on the UGC Equity Regulations 2026 led to a clash between two groups. Following the incident, both sides lodged cross-FIRs, accusing each other of assault and intimidation.

According to the order, the decision was taken based on inputs suggesting that unrestricted gatherings, rallies and demonstrations could cause traffic disruptions, pose risks to public safety and disturb peace on campus. It noted that in previous instances, organisers were unable to manage protests effectively, leading to escalation and deterioration of law and order.

DU Proctor Manoj Kumar clarified that there was no particular reason for setting the restriction period at one month.
