Delhi to Uttar Pradesh to Himachal: IMD issues rainfall warning for many states

A depression that had been affecting Southwest Uttar Pradesh and neighboring regions has moved north-northeastwards and weakened into a well-marked low pressure area. This low pressure system is currently situated over northwest Uttar Pradesh and its surrounding areas. It is expected to weaken further into a low pressure area. The IMD has issued rainfall alerts for many states including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.

Flood alert

The flash flood risk is moderate to high over several areas due to anticipated rainfall, according to IMD. Areas at risk include:
Uttarakhand: Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, Udham Singh Nagar, and Uttarkashi districts.


Himachal Pradesh: Shimla and Sirmaur districts. There is a potential for surface runoff and inundation in fully saturated soils and low-lying areas, as depicted in the risk map, due to expected rainfall over the next 24 hours.

Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the southwest monsoon may begin its withdrawal from parts of the country between September 19 and 25, 2024. The monsoon typically starts over Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8, beginning its retreat from northwest India around September 17 and withdrawing completely by October 15. According to IMD, conditions are expected to become favorable for the monsoon's withdrawal from some parts of northwest India during the latter half of the month.

Seasonal Rainfall Summary

Since the monsoon began on June 1, 2024, the country has recorded 836.7 mm of rainfall, which is 8% above the normal average of 772.5 mm. East and northeast India have seen 16% below-normal rainfall, while northwest, central, and south India have experienced 4%, 19%, and 25% excess rainfall, respectively. The IMD had earlier predicted above-normal rainfall for the season, estimating cumulative precipitation at 106% of the long-period average of 870 mm.
