Delhi sees wettest monsoon season in 46 years

A highly unusual monsoon season this year has yielded 1,100 mm of rainfall in Delhi so far, the highest in 46 years. The national capital recorded a total of 1,150 mm of rainfall in 1975.

Record-breaking spree
It has been a bountiful September for Delhi, with 343.6 mm of rainfall recorded so far this month, which is the highest in at least 12 years, according to data available on the IMD's website.

Extensive waterlogging
Heavy rainfall and consequent waterlogging, however, disrupted the normal, everyday life in various parts of city. Due to the heavy downpur several routes were either partially or completely waterlogged causing disruption in traffic movement. As many as 262 waterlogging complaints were received by the public works department and civic agencies till Saturday afternoon.

Intense wet spell
Normally, Delhi records 648.9 mm of rainfall during the monsoon season, according to the IMD. Between June 1, when the monsoon season starts, and September 11, the city normally gets 590.2 mm of rainfall.

Once every year, the iconic Minto Bridge underpass in New Delhi is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Whenever rainwater accumulates at Minto Bridge, there have been numerous instances in previous year of vehicles, even those as large as buses, getting stuck. In July last year, a 56-year-old man drowned in the pool of water there.
