The national capital today reported fewer Covid cases compared to a day earlier. As per official data, Delhi saw 1,396 fresh Covid19 infections in Delhi in the last 24 hours, compared to 1527 cases a day earlier.

As per today's offcial figures, active caseload stands at 4,631 while the positivity rate is at 31.9%.

Like several parts of the country, Delhi is also witnessing a surge in Covid cases.

As per Union Health Ministry data issued this morning, India reported 27 Covid-19 deaths, the highest single-day fatalities in the past six months. The last time India recorded 20 or more Covid deaths was on October 15, 2022. The country's overall death toll has now increased to 5,31,091.

A total of 10,753 new COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours in the country, marking a marginal dip from Friday's count of 11,109 cases, as per the daily bulletin released by the Union Health Ministry.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday advised citizens not to panic amid rising Covid cases, saying that they should maintain proper hygiene.

"Don't panic. We have controlled it before, We will do it now also with your support. Covid cases are rising, but don't panic. Maintain hygiene," the statement said.

According to leading epidemiologists and virologists, the new Covid variant -- XBB.1.16 -- could be the reason behind the increase in cases.

"People in high-risk groups -- pregnant ladies, those over the age of 60, those with chronic illnesses, and those with underlying health conditions, immunocompromised -- face an increased risk of severe illness and death from Covid-19. We need to protect them," read the statement.
