Earlier this year, Delhi faced a severe water crisis in October due to high ammonia contamination in the Yamuna River, which disrupted water treatment plants (WTPs). Plants at Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi struggled to process the ammonia-laden water, leading to shortages and complaints of contamination in areas like Vasant Kunj and Anand Vihar. The situation normalized once ammonia levels decreased.Capacity Issues at WTPs
A government report submitted on July 29 highlighted the need for increased capacity at Delhi’s WTPs. While the operational capacity of the city’s nine WTPs is 950 million gallons daily (mgd), they often process up to 990mgd. Overburdening these plants affects their efficiency and the quality of treated water, the report noted. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
