Delhi: Severe waterlogging in National Capital following incessant rainfall
The Delhi rains have caused widespread traffic snarls in the national capita. Amid heavy rainfall in Delhi on Wednesday, the Delhi Traffic Police received over 50 complaints from 6 PM till midnight regarding waterlogging and traffic jams across the city. The Delhi rains also led to tragic incidents, claiming three lives, while local authorities took action to address these issues.

Delhi saw significant rainfall measurements, and officials have been urged to remain vigilant.

The Delhi Traffic Police control room recorded around 50 calls for waterlogging and several calls about traffic jams amid heavy Delhi rains. Local traffic police officials were notified, and efforts were made to mitigate the disruptions caused due to Delhi.

Two separate incidents in the national capital led to the loss of three lives. While Delhi rains caused traffic disruptions, in the PS Ghazipur area, 22-year-old Tanuja and her three-year-old son Priyansh drowned in a waterlogged drain. Additionally, another individual lost his life when an old structure collapsed in the Subji Mandi area of Delhi.

The Delhi Fire Service reported that the incident in Subji Mandi occurred around 9 PM. Five fire tenders and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were dispatched to the site. Following their efforts, the deceased was recovered from the debris. Besides these, there were multiple calls related to traffic issues and fallen trees, indicating widespread impact due to the heavy rainfall in Delhi.

Due to Delhi rains, further damage was reported in the Daryaganj area, where a wall of a private school collapsed, damaging five cars parked outside. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded 147.5 mm of rainfall. Specific stations, such as Salwan Station Mayur Vihar in East Delhi, also reported 147.5 mm of rainfall from 8:30 AM on July 31 to 7:15 AM the next day.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena addressed the situation and called for heightened alertness.

"Have cautioned all officers to remain alert in light of the ongoing heavy downpour in Delhi. Apart from ensuring minimum inconvenience to people in general, they are advised to specifically address issues at sites prone to waterlogging, including coaching centres," he posted on X.

In response to the heavy rainfall and forecasted conditions, Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced that all schools in the city would remain closed on Thursday.

"In light of the very heavy rainfall this evening and the forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools, both government and private, will remain closed on August 1st," she posted on 'X'.

The IMD has warned that the continuous showers could cause slippery roads, low visibility, traffic disruptions, and localized waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD has also predicted that intermittent showers are likely to continue in Delhi till August 5.

As the rainfall persists, residents and officials are urged to remain cautious and prepared for further weather-related disruptions.
