The apex court directed the Centre to ensure that the Metro functions according to its normal schedule and that there is no disruption to internet services. It further said lawyers shall not be impeded in discharging their professional duties.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that entry and exit had been restricted to only 45 of the 303 stations across the Delhi Metro network on October 10.
The Supreme Court also issued notice to the Centre on a plea seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against authorities alleging violation of the court's directions.
The apex court's observations came amid concerns over restrictions and disruptions linked to the Cockroach Janta Party-led demonstrations in Delhi.
The Supreme Court said normal Metro operations should continue unless a law-and-order situation arises. It also indicated that its interim directions would cover the free movement of the public, restoration of internet services and the ability of lawyers to carry out their professional responsibilities without obstruction.
Further, the top court added that it would grant a hearing to all lawyers involved in the matter, signalling that the concerns raised in the contempt pleas would be considered before further action.
