Delhi Police modernizes staff uniforms: Updates, designs, and more

The three-year effort by Delhi Police to modernize its staff uniforms is almost complete, according to insiders who say the brass is almost done deciding on a design.

The rank and file has been experimenting with different uniforms as part of their effort to implement a more comfortable and useful wardrobe.

The police leadership is concentrating on improving the uniform's functioning rather than changing the classic khaki color.


For example, the most recent trial sample included pants with six-pocket cargos. An officer clarified that the goal was to create a uniform that would be appropriate for summer and winter wear and have plenty of storage space.

The concept was initially conceived in 2022 by former police commissioner Rakesh Asthana, who also appointed an eight-member group chaired by a joint commissioner-rank official.

Delhi Police asked the National Institute of Fashion Technology to create the outfit, including accessories like headgear and belts. The institute's staff began gathering comments from police personnel.

Officers were given questionnaires to discuss desired changes to the new uniform and challenges they faced while wearing the present one, according to another officer.

In many foreign nations, law enforcement professionals wear cargo pants, as do commandos of special forces or paramilitary soldiers in India. According to sources, the people who man the desks may also be given a separate uniform. The office personnel is currently authorized to wear formal pants and shirts.

Shoes, jackets, and caps may also alter depending on the season, they claimed. The military also intends to alter the tunic outfits for duties such as flag hoisting and parade.
