The Delhi Transport Department has taken a step forward in enforcing the pollution norms by installing special cameras at strategic locations. As per a TOI report, these cameras, powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), capture the number plates of vehicles and cross-check them with the department's database to determine if they have a valid pollution under control (PUC) certificate.

If a vehicle is found to be without a valid PUC, the owner will receive a notice from the Delhi Transport Department via SMS. The pilot project, which has been operational for the past two months at four petrol pumps in Delhi's Model Town, Shastri Nagar, Mall Road, and Shahdara, has revealed that 15-20 percent of vehicles entering these pumps do not possess a valid PUC.

Based on the success of the pilot project, the department plans to extend the PUC tracking cameras to 25 petrol pumps across the city. Currently, violators are only notified via SMS, but efforts are underway to generate e-challans and send them directly to owners without valid PUC.

With the smog season approaching in Delhi, such technologies can play a crucial role in controlling pollution levels and deterring violations.

To get your PUC certificate refreshed, follow these steps:
  • If you reside in Delhi and need to renew your pollution under control certificate, there is good news.
  • Delhi has 950 fuel pumps where you can easily get your PUC certificate.
  • The process is simple and takes just a few minutes.
  • The current prices for pollution tests range from Rs 60 for two-wheelers to Rs 80 for petrol four-wheelers and Rs 100 for diesel four-wheelers.
  • Please note that these prices do not include the 18 percent GST levied on top of them.

For BS-4 and BS-6 compliant vehicles, the PUC certificate is valid for one year, while vehicles complying with BS-3, 2, or 1 standards receive a certificate valid for three months.
