Earlier today, the Delhi Police had strengthened security at the Prime Minister house after the AAP called for a "gherao". The police had also raised security preparations in many other parts of the city in anticipation of likely protests.
Delhi Traffic Police officials cautioned about possible disruptions in parts of New Delhi and Central Delhi due to likely protests. A Delhi Police officer said that stringent security measures have been put in place to uphold law and order in the area. He cited the imposition of Section 144 around the prime minister's residence, prohibiting any form of protest.
Delhi Minister Gopal Rai had earlier said that plans were on to gherao prime minister's residence on Tuesday in protest against Kejriwal's detention. Rai also hinted at more such demonstrations across the nation.
Kejriwal, taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with a money-laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, remains in the agency's custody. The ED says Kejriwal sought kickbacks from liquor traders for favours.
Kejriwal has denied the accusations and called out the BJP-led Centre for manipulating investigative agencies for political gains.
Meanwhile, in anticipation of the protest, the Delhi Traffic Police set up seven diversion points to facilitate smooth vehicular movement. Commuters were advised to avoid specific routes like Kemal Ataturk Marg, Safdarjung Road, Akbar Road, and Teen Murti Marg.
