Delhi PG crisis: Only 3 PG buildings out of 1,355 found 'visibly dangerous' in MCD survey, 9 found repairable

New Delhi: Three paying-guest-accommodation buildings housing 69 occupants have been found to be "visibly dangerous" during an ongoing safety survey of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), as it carried out demolition action at 111 properties and sealed 88 properties over the last four days, officials said on Thursday.

The corporation has also found nine other buildings requiring major repairs, they added.

The survey was launched after a five-storey PG building in south Delhi's Satya Niketan collapsed on Sunday, killing seven people. It has so far covered 1,355 PG buildings across the national capital.

Of these, 1,304 buildings housing 26,917 occupants were found to be "visibly safe", while three buildings housing 69 occupants were classified as "visibly dangerous", the officials said.

All three visibly-dangerous buildings were identified in South Zone-I, where the survey is still underway.

The civic body has also found nine PG buildings housing 140 occupants to be "visibly repairable" but in need of major repairs. These include five buildings in Keshav Puram housing 36 occupants, two in Najafgarh housing 38 occupants and two in South Zone-II housing 66 occupants.

Another 39 buildings housing 664 occupants were found to require minor repairs.

The survey has also identified a number of prospective "vulnerable buildings", including 21 framed structures above G+4 in Civil Lines housing 420 occupants.

Shahdara South Zone-II reported 57 such structures housing 2,036 occupants, while seven buildings housing 106 occupants were identified in Karol Bagh. Five such structures housing 90 occupants were reported from Shahdara South Zone-I and two housing 20 occupants from Najafgarh.

The survey is underway in several zones, with the data in some areas described as interim.

According to the officials, the civic body carried out demolition action at seven properties on September 7, 17 properties on September 8, 46 on September 9 and 41 on September 10.

It sealed two properties on September 7, five on September 8, 20 on September 9 and 61 on September 10.

During the four days, the MCD issued 91 show-cause notices related to unauthorised construction and 69 show-cause notices for sealing action. A total of 34 demolition orders were also issued.

The intensified inspections and enforcement action come days after the Satya Niketan building collapse put the spotlight on the safety of buildings being used as PG accommodation and other structures across the capital.
