According to the IMD's seven-day forecast, rainy conditions are expected to persist in Delhi until July 1, with temperatures hovering around 39 degrees Celsius. The agency also predicted a gradual decline in maximum temperatures over the coming days, dropping to 38 degrees on Thursday and Friday, 36 on Saturday, and 34 on Sunday.
On Wednesday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather Services said the monsoon current could arrive in Delhi by the end of this week, bringing relief from the prevailing sultry conditions.
Mahesh Palawat, vice-chairman of meteorology and climate change at Skymet, highlighted the potential arrival of the monsoon between June 28 and 30, noting historical data from previous years when monsoon currents typically reached Delhi between June 27 and 29.
Prior to the recent downpour, Delhi had endured nine heatwave days in June, a stark contrast to the same period in 2023 and 2022 when no heatwaves were recorded.
The rainfall provided much-needed relief after weeks of intense heatwave conditions across Delhi and northern India.
The IMD's alert encompassed the broader region, including Ghaziabad, Noida, and Gurugram, signaling more rain in the vicinity.
ANI visuals captured heavy rainfall in Munirka, Sarita Vihar, and other parts of Delhi, reinforcing the IMD's forecast of continued showers during the day.
Quoting the IMD's update at 7:30 AM, "Light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km/h are expected over Delhi and adjoining areas in the next two hours."
Looking ahead, weather experts remain optimistic about the monsoon's impending arrival, projecting it by the end of this week. Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services indicated, "The monsoon is expected to reach Delhi on June 29 or 30." However, the IMD has yet to specify the exact entry date of the monsoon current into the capital.
Last year, the monsoon arrived on June 26, with the first showers of 2022 recorded on June 30, underscoring the variability in monsoon onset dates.
