Delhi air pollution: Govt mulls idea of artificial rain by Nov 20, says minister Gopal Rai
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Wednesday that the government would reevaluate the effectiveness of the odd-even car rationing scheme following the Supreme Court's recent scrutiny of the initiative. The scheme, designed to mitigate vehicular pollution, has come under examination, with the apex court questioning its impact and referring to it as "all optics."

The odd-even car rationing scheme, which has been previously implemented in Delhi during periods of high pollution, involves restricting the use of private vehicles based on the last digit of their license plates. The primary aim is to reduce traffic congestion and curb emissions, which contribute to the city's air pollution woes.

The Supreme Court's recent remarks have brought the scheme's efficiency into question, prompting the Delhi government to take a closer look at its impact. The government's decision to conduct a review reflects its commitment to addressing the city's persistent air quality issues effectively.

Amid worsening air quality in the national capital, Rai had earlier announced the flagship scheme, under which cars are allowed to operate on alternate days based on their odd or even number plates, would be enforced between November 13 and November 20.

Addressing a press conference, Rai said the city government will submit two major studies conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of the scheme for the perusal of the Supreme Court.

"A call will be taken to implement the odd-even scheme only after the Supreme Court reviews its effectiveness and issues an order," the minister said.

The odd-even car rationing scheme, introduced in 2016, allows cars to operate on alternate days based on their odd or even number plates. The enforcement next week will mark the fourth time that the Delhi government has used this scheme to address pollution caused by vehicles.
