The accident occurred last Saturday evening. Mandal was returning from his workplace at the time of the incident, ToI's report (by Abhay) said.
CCTV footage from the scene revealed a chilling series of events. Mandal was hit by the car, which then dragged him for nearly 600 metres. The footage shows the victim trapped beneath the vehicle while a cyclist attempted to alert the young driver.
Despite the warnings, the boy continued to drive, only stopping when Mandal was dislodged from under the car. He then sped away from the scene, leaving the victim badly injured on the roadside.
A passerby discovered Mandal and promptly alerted the authorities. He was rushed to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The victim's brother-in-law, Jitesh, identified the body at the hospital.
Following the incident, police took quick action. They tracked down the minor driver after identifying the car’s registration number from the CCTV footage.
The boy claimed that he fled the scene out of fear, believing that a crowd might retaliate against him. Authorities have since registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against him.
The investigating officers found critical evidence at the accident site, including a pair of black slippers belonging to the victim and blood samples. The police conducted a thorough examination of both the collision site and the location where Mandal was found, gathering essential information to support their case.
This incident echoes many such similar tragedies in the capital city. One such accident was from January 1, 2023, when a woman on a scooter was hit and dragged for a staggering 11-12 kilometres. She, too, succumbed to her injuries, highlighting a disturbing trend of reckless driving in urban areas.
