Delhi activates GRAP Stage II
In response to the deteriorating air quality across the National Capital Region (NCR), authorities have activated Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) starting at 8:00 AM on October 22, 2024. The decision was made by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) after Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 312, categorizing it as "Very Poor." This action aims to curb pollution levels through stricter measures. But what exactly are the different stages of GRAP, and what do they entail? Let's break down all four stages of the system.
2/5
Stage I (Poor AQI 201-300)
This stage is triggered when the AQI crosses 200 but remains under 300, indicating poor air quality. The focus here is on controlling dust emissions and improving waste management, especially at construction sites. Efforts are made to limit pollution from industries and power plants, along with imposing restrictions on vehicles that don't meet pollution norms. Stage I is a preventive step to keep air quality from worsening.
3/5
Stage II (Very Poor AQI 301-400)
When air quality drops into the "very poor" category, with AQI between 301 and 400, additional restrictions are introduced. These include limiting the use of diesel vehicles and halting operations at brick kilns and stone crushers. The emphasis is on reducing emissions further as air pollution becomes more severe, with the goal of preventing it from escalating into hazardous territory.

Stage III (Severe AQI 401-450)
At this stage, when AQI ranges from 401 to 450, air pollution reaches "severe" levels, requiring even more stringent actions. All construction and development activities are ordered to stop completely, while further curbs on industrial emissions are imposed. This stage marks a critical point where drastic measures are needed to prevent the situation from spiraling into an environmental emergency.
5/5
Stage IV (Severe Plus AQI >450)
When the AQI surpasses 450, the highest level of emergency measures comes into force under Stage IV. A complete ban is placed on all non-essential commercial activities, including construction and manufacturing. Emergency protocols such as road rationing, including the odd-even vehicle scheme, may also be implemented. This stage represents the most extreme response in the GRAP system, focusing on protecting public health during periods of dangerously high pollution levels.
