Delhi hit-and-run case: Speeding car rams scooter, rider falls to death

A 49-year-old scooter rider, Rakesh Kumar Agarwal, fell to his death from NH-24 Manglam Cut Flyover in east Delhi’s Pandav Nagar after being hit by a car, suspected of speeding, late Wednesday night, reported The Times of India.

Agarwal fell 15–20 feet from the flyover to the concrete footpath below and was declared ‘brought dead’ by doctors at LBS Hospital. The force of the impact scattered parts of the scooter below the flyover.

The car driver fled the scene and is currently absconding. Police said they received a PCR call reporting the accident around 12:03 am on Thursday.

The car that struck a scooter, causing its rider to fall to his death from east Delhi’s NH-24 Manglam Cut flyover, was itself badly damaged in the collision, police at the scene said, suggesting that the sedan was being driven at high speed.

“An auto driver named Amit Kumar was en route to Ghazipur when he witnessed the crash. With the help of bystanders, he rushed the victim to LBS Hospital,” said a senior police officer told ToI.

DCP (East) Abhishek Dhania added, “The car’s owner has been identified as Shakil Ahmed, a resident of Friends Colony, who is currently out of the city.”

An FIR has been registered at Pandav Nagar police station under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (causing death by negligence).

The victim, Rakesh Kumar Agarwal, ran a douna pattal (plates and bowls made from leaves or other materials) manufacturing unit in Badarpur. He is survived by his wife and two daughters in their twenties, one pursuing a medical career and the other in engineering.

Outside the mortuary at LBS Hospital, Agarwal’s wife, Hemlata, sat in shock, her face streaked with tears, while relatives and colleagues tried to console her. Through her grief, she wailed, “He’s gone… what words do I have left?”
