Sonam Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar

The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the authorities to conduct daily health check-ups of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, and provide medical intervention whenever required.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia underscored the importance of safeguarding life, saying Wangchuk's health should be monitored regularly by government doctors.

Appearing for the Centre and the Delhi government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that the life of every individual was valuable and that the authorities had no objection to carrying out Wangchuk's routine medical examinations.

"We observe that life of any citizen is precious and all efforts ought to be made by government authorities to save the same," the court said.

"We appreciate the stand taken by the Solicitor General and direct that Wangchuk's medical condition shall be monitored on a daily basis and whatever medical intervention is required shall be taken," it added.

The directions came while hearing a public interest litigation expressing concern over Wangchuk's deteriorating health.

The Cockroach Janta Party has been staging a protest at Jantar Mantar for over 25 days, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
