The Delhi government on Tuesday extended permit validity of taxis running on CNG and other clean fuels up to 15 years, the official notification said. However, this extension is subject to the fulfilment of all other prescribed conditions as stipulated in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, and Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules (DMVR), 1993, it said.

"All the Taxies plying on CNG/Clean Fuel registered in Delhi possessing Contract Carriage (Delhi NCR) Permit, the validity of the permit shall remain valid for 15 years subject to fulfillment of all other prescribed conditions as stipulates in Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, CMVR, 1989 and DMVR, 1993, " the notification said.

Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said the move will help thousands of taxi drivers who will be able to ply their CNG vehicles for a total of 15 years now.

"It is an initiative towards providing cleaner and greener modes of transportation while ensuring the welfare and convenience of taxi owners and operators in the city," Gahlot said.

The decision to extend the permit validity comes after a careful observation by the transport department, which revealed a disparity in the duration of permits among various categories of taxis operating under the contract carriage permit in Delhi, the statement said.

A number of representations were received from various Taxi Unions registered in Delhi demanding to implement uniformity in respect of validity of the permits issued under Section 74 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, also known as Contract Carriage Delhi NCR Permit upto 15 years.

Some of the Unions and individuals also approached Delhi High Court to seek the removal of disparity in respect to validity of permit among the various category of Taxies plying on the Contract Carriage Permit (Delhi NCR).

The Delhi High Court had then directed the transport department to consider the grievances of the petitioner and pass necessary orders.
