Delhi gangsters flying abroad just to make ransom calls from international numbers to throw cops off scent

Delhi police have arrested a member of a gang making extortion calls from Dubai and Malaysia. The gang, led by jailed gangster Dinesh Karala, targeted businessmen in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), demanding large sums of money, ToI reported on January 14.

Sitender Kumar, a resident of Jhajjar, Haryana, was arrested upon his return to Delhi after traveling through Dubai and Mumbai. He is wanted in three extortion cases. Police say Kumar and his associate, Ajay, who is still at large in Dubai, used foreign phone numbers to avoid detection.

“They made extortion calls to businessmen in Delhi and the NCR from Malaysia and Dubai. The gang demanded crores of rupees from their targets, including an NRI businessman based in Dubai. To exert pressure, the gang even arranged for their associates to fire shots at the residence of the NRI's relative in Ghaziabad,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Sanjay Bhatia.


The gang also fired shots at relatives' homes to pressure victims into paying. “The accused, a resident of Jhajjar, Haryana, is wanted in three extortion cases registered at different police stations,” stated Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Shrivasta. They used fake SIM cards and mobile phones.

Karala, currently in Mandoli Jail for the murder of singer Harshita Dahiya, took control of the gang after the death of Jitender Mann, alias Gogi, in 2021. He continues to run the extortion racket from jail, targeting various businesses and recruiting new members. Police are searching for Ajay and other gang members, as well as investigating the source of the fake SIM cards.
