Uphaar fire tragedy: Sushil, Gopal Ansal get 7-year jail terms in evidence tampering case
Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday sentenced seven years' jail terms to convict businessmen Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal, among others, in the case related to tampering with the crucial evidence in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case. The Court also ordered to take them into custody immediately with an imposed fine of Rs 2.25 crore on both.

"It is a long case. Very hard to reach a decision given the complexities involved. After thinking for night after night, the Court thinks the accused deserve punishment. They will serve 7 years of jail time and Rs 2.25 crore fine each on the Ansals," the court said.

The Delhi Court also awarded 7-year-jail terms each to ex-court staff Dinesh Chand Sharma, PP Batra, and Anoop Singh.

The Uphaar Cinema fire on 13th June 1997 is seen as one of the worst fire tragedies in recent Indian history, where 59 people were trapped inside and died of asphyxiation, while 103 were seriously injured in the resulting stampede.
