A Delhi court on Wednesday extended the judicial custody of Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, till August 13, 2025.

Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, is facing trial in India for his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.

In the last hearing on June 9, the court had permitted Rana to speak to his family members over a phone call. Special Judge Chander Jit Singh had allowed the one-time call under the supervision of jail authorities and in accordance with the jail manual.

Rana was extradited to India earlier this year after the US Supreme Court, on April 4, dismissed his review plea challenging the extradition. Advocate Piyush Sachdeva from the Delhi Legal Services Authority is representing him in court.

According to Indian authorities, Rana conspired with David Coleman Headley, also known as Daood Gilani, and operatives of terror outfits Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI), along with other Pakistan-based associates, in planning the Mumbai attacks.

On November 26, 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists carried out coordinated attacks across Mumbai, targeting a railway station, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish centre. The attackers entered the city using the sea route from the Arabian Sea. The siege lasted nearly 60 hours and claimed 166 lives.
