A Delhi Court accepted the police’s closure report on Monday recommending cancellation of the sexual harassment case filed by a ‘minor’ wrestler against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh. The move brings a formal end to the case that had seen major controversy, protests and upheaval in India's wrestling community.

The court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Gomti Manocha, had summoned the complainant — one of the wrestlers at the centre of the storm — to appear on May 26, before deciding on the closure report.

During an in-chamber proceeding last year, the complainant had already informed the previous judge that she was satisfied with the Delhi Police investigation and did not oppose the closure of the case.

The Delhi Police had filed the closure report on June 15, 2023, after the girl’s father made a startling admission that the complaint had been fabricated to settle personal scores over perceived injustice to his daughter. The police concluded that there was “no corroborative evidence” to support the allegations and recommended that the POCSO case be dropped.

Although the POCSO case has now been closed, Singh still faces charges of sexual harassment in a separate case filed by six other women wrestlers.

Singh, a former BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, has repeatedly denied all allegations, claiming political motivation behind the charges.
