Delhi building collapse: CM Rekha Gupta vows action, 11 rescued from Satya Niketan site

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said those who were responsible for the residential building collapse in Satya Niketan area of South-West Delhi won't be spared.

She also reported that 11 people were rescued and relief operations are underway to save the lives of those trapped and provide all possible assistance to the collapse site.

“11 people have been rescued. I am going to the hospital. We need to understand the condition of all those who have been rescued. I can say this much: whoever is responsible for this, whether it is the building owner or an official, will not be spared,” she said.


The multi storey building collapsed in the South-West Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday.

The Delhi CM, who visited the collapse site to monitor the rescue operation, said the government’s immediate priority was to rescue people trapped under the debris and assess the condition of those already rescued.

"It is a very unfortunate incident. Ever since we received information about the building collapse, rescue and relief operations have been underway to save the lives of those trapped and provide all possible assistance,” said Gupta.

The Chief Minister highlighted the building’s age and assured that those responsible would be investigated and the guilty would be punished.

"I can assure you that those responsible will be investigated, especially since the building was old. There will be no compromise, and the guilty will not be spared. Eleven people have been rescued so far. I am now going to the hospital," she said.

Gupta said the preliminary cause of the collapse was due to a shift in a pillar during renovation and excavation work.

“The building was old, and some construction and renovation work was underway. Some kind of excavation was being carried out in the basement, due to which a pillar shifted and the entire building collapsed,” Gupta said.

The Delhi Chief Minister said the building was being used to provide paying guest accommodation and that children were inside when it collapsed and emphasised the priority to rescue them first

“The building was being used as a PG (Paying Guest), and children were inside. All agencies are continuously working,” she said.

“Our priority is to save the lives of these children first. The rescue operation will continue in the same manner. All officials are present here, and there will be no shortage of any kind. However, the guilty will not be spared,” Gupta added.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police on Sunday confirmed that three people were killed in the building collapse.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities continued their rescue operations at the site and investigated if anyone else remained trapped under the debris.
