Delhi Police has directed all second-hand car dealers across the national capital and neighbouring states to verify and share details of recent vehicle sales as part of the ongoing investigation into the Red Fort blast case, a PTI report quoting officials said. The move follows the detention of a Faridabad-based car dealer linked to the vehicle allegedly used in Monday’s explosion that killed 12 people and injured several others.

Dealers under scanner after blast-linked car traced

PTI report quoting police sources said the Special Cell detained Amit, owner of Royal Car Plaza in Faridabad’s Sector 37, late Monday night with assistance from the Faridabad Police. He allegedly facilitated the sale of the Hyundai i20 that was used in the blast near the Red Fort.

“Amit is being questioned. The investigation team is tracing the entire chain of ownership of the Hyundai i20 and determining how it reached the suspect’s hands. We are verifying who brought the vehicle to his showroom and through whom Dr Umar Nabi came in contact with him,” a source told PTI.

DCPs asked to conduct checks across all districts

Following the blast, Delhi Police issued fresh directions to all Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) in the city’s 15 districts to hold meetings with local car dealers and instruct Station House Officers (SHOs) to review dealership records.

“SHOs have been asked to visit car dealerships in their jurisdictions and verify documentation related to recently sold or transferred vehicles. They have also been tasked with collecting details of buyers, especially those from Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and identifying any suspicious transactions,” a senior police officer said.

The verification drive is being coordinated with Haryana Police and Uttar Pradesh Police to trace vehicle transactions that may have been conducted using fake identities or unverified cash payments.

Dealers told to tighten verification norms

In a meeting held with used-car dealers in Delhi, police advised businesses to ensure proper buyer verification before finalising any transaction.

“Dealers were advised to maintain proper sale-purchase records and verify buyer credentials such as Aadhaar, driving licence and address proofs before handing over any vehicle. They were also encouraged to immediately report any suspicious buyers or transactions to the police,” the officer added.

Focus on preventing misuse of unverified sales

Officials said the move is aimed at preventing vehicles from being used for illegal activities through unverified or cash-based transactions. The Special Cell is also examining CCTV footage, transaction logs, and dealership records to identify intermediaries linked to the car’s sale.
