Delhi Airport roof collapses
A portion of the roof at Delhi Aiport Terminal 1 collapsed on Friday amid incessant rains. The incident happened around 5 am at the departure area of Terminal 1 (T1) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid heavy rains in the national capital. Upon receiving the information, around three fire tenders rushed to the spot.

One killed, several injured
One person has been reported dead after the portion of the canopy, at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1, collapsed. "The shed of the airport collapsed, resulting in 8 persons trapped. The injured were rescued and removed to Medanta Hospital by PCR/CATS. One trapped person was taken out in dead condition", ADO Ravinder stated.

Flight operations suspended
As a result of the incident, flight operations in Delhi Airport T1 has been suspended. T1 has only domestic flight operations by IndiGo and SpiceJet. The airport -- which has three terminals T1, T2 and T3 -- handles around 1,400 flight movements daily. Sources quoted by PTI said that the operations have been halted till 2pm. They also said that soon after the incident at around 5 am, it was decided to suspend the flight departures while passengers who were already inside the terminal took their flights.

Aviation Minister takes stock
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu visited the airport to take stock of the situation and also met with the injured people admitted at the Safdarjung hospital in the national capital.

Delhi Airport Statement
"Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Delhi airport's Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected," a DIAL spokesperson said in a statement. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a consortium led by GMR Group, is the operator of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital.

Aviation ministry responds
The civil aviation ministry on Friday said heavy rain has resulted in the collapse of the canopy of Delhi airport T1. "As a result of which flights to & from Terminal 1 have been closed till further notice. Alternate arrangements are being made for the smooth operation of the flights," the ministry said in a post on X.

Investigation announced
An investigation has been ordered into the roof collapse at Delhi airport's Terminal 1 on Friday early morning that left one dead and six injured, with Naidu announcing that a thorough inspection of the structure at the airport will be carried out.
