The heavy rainfall resulted in several shops and restaurants being damaged. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that police and SDRF were on the spot and are engaged in rescue and relief operations."Sad news has been received that some shops were damaged due to heavy rain at night in Sahastradhara, Dehradun. The administration, SDRF, and police are on the scene, engaged in relief and rescue operations. In this regard, I am in constant contact with the local administration and personally monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone's safety," Dhami said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, the Chandrabhaga river in Rishikesh also overflowed due to heavy rainfall. The water flowed on to the highway, trapping several vehicles. The SDRF said that it rescued three people who were stranded in the river.
"Due to heavy rainfall, water level of the Chandhaga River rose, causing water to flood up to the highway and trapping several vehicles. During this, 03 people were stranded in the middle of the river, whom the SDRF team promptly rescued and safely brought to a secure location," SDRF Uttarakhand Police said on X.
Further, the Tamsa river also overflowed, inundating the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, one of the city's most prominent shrines. Water entered the temple courtyard and rose to the statue of Hanuman, though the sanctum sanctorum remained safe.
Speaking to ANI, Temple priest Acharya Bipin Joshi said that the river started flowing heavily since morning, and the entire temple premises were submerged.
"The river started flowing heavily since 5 AM, the entire temple premises were submerged... This kind of situation had not taken place in a very long time... Losses have been incurred at various places... People should avoid going near rivers at this time... The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is safe... No human loss has been reported as of now..." he said.
All schools from classes 1 to 12 in Dehradun are currently shut in view of the heavy rain and cloudburst, according to an order issued by the District Magistrate.
Heavy rainfall, cloudbursts and landslides have ravaged various parts of Uttarakhand this year, including Dharali-Harsil in Uttarkashi, Tharali in Chamoli, Chenagad in Rudraprayag, Sainji in Pauri, Kapkot in Bageshwar and parts of Nainital district.
