Bay of Bengal depression: The IMD warns of light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal on Thursday and Friday. The India Meteorological Department in its latest weather forecast has said the depression over west central Bay of Bengal moved has northwards and has intensified into a Deep Depression. Thereafter, the cyclone is expected to recurve north-northeastwards and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast on 17th morning and cross Bangladesh coast between Mongla and Khepupara as a Deep Depression with wind speed 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph in the morning of 18th November.

Location of Cyclone

According to IMD, the cyclone lay centred about 380 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 480 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 630 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 780 km southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

Rainfall warning

According to IMD, light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely on Thursday and Friday over coastal districts of Odisha & West Bengal. Rainfall is also forecast over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 16th to 18th November and over south Assam and east Meghalaya on Friday.


According private weather forecaster Skymet some of the coastal locations in Odisha and West Bengal like Satapada, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Baleswar, Baripada, Digha, Contai, Diamond Harbour, Haldia, Nandigram and South 24 Pargana can expect squally weather and heavy rains during this period. "Mednipur, Howrah and Kolkata will keep relatively safe distance from the core of depression. However, cloudy skies with moderate or light showers can not be ruled out," the weather foreaster said.

The IMD has advised fishermen who are out at sea to return to coast. It has also advised fishermen not to venture into sea along and off Andhra Pradesh Coast till 17th November; along and off Odisha and West Bengal Odisha coast till 18th November.

Wind Warning

IMD has forecast squally weather with wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph over southwest Bay of Bengal along and off Tamil Nadu on Thursday. It has also forecast squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting upto 60 kmph along Andhra, Odisha and West Bengal coasts.
