According to India Meteorological Department, a deep depression has formed over Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal. The system, which initially started as a depression, has intensified and is now located about 90 km northeast of Canning (West Bengal) and 100 km east-northeast of Kolkata (West Bengal). The deep depression is advancing west-northwestward at a speed of 23 km/h. It is expected to maintain its current intensity until this evening. Following this period, the system is projected to weaken to a depression as it continues its trajectory across Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand over the next 48 hours.

Rain forecast

September 14: IMD expects light to moderate rainfall across Gangetic West Bengal (including Kolkata), with heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations. Isolated places may experience extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Odisha Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram & Tripura, Assam & Meghalaya over next two days.

Wind Warning

North Bay of Bengal and Coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and North Odisha: Squally winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h, gusting to 70 km/h, are currently occurring. This condition is expected to persist until the evening of September 14, with wind speeds likely decreasing to 40-50 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h thereafter. Gangetic West Bengal (Including Kolkata), North Odisha, and Jharkhand: Squally winds reaching 45-55 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h, are likely from the night of September 14 to the morning of September 15. North Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Southeast Uttar Pradesh: Squally winds with speeds of 40-50 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h, are expected from the evening of September 15 to the evening of September 16.

Sea Conditions

North Bay of Bengal and Coasts of West Bengal-Odisha: Rough to very rough sea conditions are forecasted until the evening of September 14. Post this, the conditions are expected to be rough until the morning of September 16.

Fishermen Warning

Fishermen are advised against venturing into the north Bay of Bengal and the coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and Odisha until the morning of September 16 due to hazardous sea conditions.

Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions are becoming favorable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from some parts of northwest India between September 19 and 25. The southwest monsoon typically arrives in Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8. It usually starts retreating from northwest India around September 17, with complete withdrawal by October 15.
