A recent surge in ATM fraud cases has prompted authorities to issue a warning to the public. Fraudsters are now following a new modus operandi, wherein they tamper with the card reader of ATMs, causing cards to get stuck during transactions. Subsequently, they offer assistance to the unsuspecting victims, only to use their PIN to withdraw money once they leave.

The latest incident, which led to the apprehension of a gang involved in such fraudulent activities, occurred in Hauz Khas. The assailants resorted to firing shots when confronted during an attempted theft at a kiosk. The individuals involved were identified as Vishal Negi (30), Amit Mehra (37), and Vijay Kumar (26).

Ankit Chauhan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the South District, highlighted the sequence of events leading to the arrest. "On April 19, we received a PCR call reporting an attempted break-in and gunfire in Gautam Nagar. Upon arrival, witnesses recounted the suspects' attempt to tamper with the ATM. When confronted, one of them brandished a firearm, fired a shot, and fled the scene," said Chauhan.

A thorough investigation ensued, with the analysis of CCTV footage proving instrumental in tracking down the suspects. The pursuit led to the identification of a vehicle associated with the perpetrators, despite the registered address turning out to be false. By scrutinizing traffic violations and insurance details linked to the vehicle, authorities managed to trace an active mobile number, ultimately leading to the arrest of the culprits.

Chauhan shed light on the gang's modus operandi, stating, "Negi and Mehra would typically position themselves inside targeted ATMs, disabling cameras and tampering with card readers. Meanwhile, a third member would keep watch outside. Upon a victim's card getting stuck, the duo would intervene under the guise of helpful customers, swiftly executing transactions before the victim could react."

The apprehended individuals, Negi and Mehra, were found to be involved in seven cases within the city. However, investigations are ongoing to ascertain their involvement in similar incidents elsewhere. The trio has been remanded to judicial custody as the investigation continues.
