Cyclone Remal: Cyclone to hit Bangladesh, West Bengal coasts; Safety measures advised

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about Cyclone Remal, expected to hit the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The cyclone, currently classified as a severe cyclonic storm, is predicted to intensify further before making landfall.

"The CS "Remal" over North BoB about 290 km S SE of Sagar Islands(WB) 300 km S SW of Khepupara(Bangladesh) and 320 km S SE of Canning (WB). To intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in next 06 hours and cross between Bangladesh and adjoining WB coasts around 26 midnight as SCS," the IMD posted on X on Sunday morning.

The IMD forecasted that the cyclone will cause rainfall and strong winds in West Bengal, coastal Bangladesh, Tripura, and some other parts of northeastern states.


A low-pressure area that was first observed on May 22 in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a more depressive system, now located in the North Bay of Bengal.

The primary regions affected are West Bengal, Coastal Bangladesh, Tripura and some other parts of north-eastern states. Residents in these areas, as well as in the neighbouring state of Tripura, are urged to brace for adverse weather conditions starting from May 26.

• Ensure safe drinking water by boiling or purifying it.

Cyclone Remal: Dos and Don'ts for Safety Outdoors:

• Beware of broken electric poles and cables to avoid harm or electrocution.
• Seek shade outdoors, but avoid structures at risk of collapse.
• Protect against dust storms and flying debris.

Cyclone Remal: Post-Cyclone Safety Measures:

• Do not return home until authorities declare the area safe.
• Get necessary vaccines and medical attention to prevent illnesses.
• Avoid contact with objects that may still carry electrical currents.

Cyclone Remal: Cyclone Impact and Preparations

• Cyclone Remal is the first cyclone of the pre-monsoon season in the Bay of Bengal.
• The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara.
• Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges are expected, prompting red and orange alerts in affected areas.

• Kolkata is likely to witness the cyclone's impact between Sunday and Monday afternoon.
• Authorities are taking measures, such as deploying personnel, keeping pumps ready, and checking for loose wires.
• Flight operations at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport will be suspended for 21 hours starting Sunday noon.
