Cyclone Biparjoy warning for Gujarat coast: Windspeed of up to 150 km, rise in sea water level

Cyclone Biparjoy: Wind warning along & off Saurashtra& Kutch coasts (Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh and Morbi districts) including Gulf of Kutch.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness to deal with the situation arising out of the cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to cross Saurashtra and Kutch between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) on June 15th.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the extremely severe cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” currently lay centred over east central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea. It is very likely to move nearly northwards till 14th morning, then move north northeastwards and cross Saurashtra & Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts by noon of 15th June.

"It is very likely to move nearly northwards till 14th morning, then move northnortheastwards and cross Saurashtra & Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by noon of 15th June as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph," IMD said in a statement.


IMD has also issued a storm surge of about 2 -3 metre above the astronomical tide is likely to inundate the low lying areas of some districts in Gujarat during the time of landfall. Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tides.

NDRF has pre-positioned 12 teams, which are equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecom equipment etc. and has kept 15 teams on standby.

The IMD has issued heavy rainfall warning for Gujarat (Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar,
Rajkot, Junagarh and Morbi districts).

The cyclone Biparjoy is also expected to cause damage to property and crops in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Morbi & Junagarh & Rajkot districts of Gujarat. Besides potential threat from flying objects and bending/ uprooting of power and communication poles, "small boats, country crafts may get detached from moorings. Visibility severely affected due to salt spray," IMD said. (With Agency Inputs)
