Odisha tragedy: Deadly fire at Cuttack’s SCB Medical College claims 10 lives, injures several
At least 10 patients died after a fire broke out in the trauma care intensive care unit of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, early Monday, CM Mohan Charan Majhi said, as reported by PTI. .

The blaze erupted due to a short-circuit in the hospital’s trauma care ICU, according to the Chief Minister, triggering panic among patients and staff.

Majhi visited the hospital soon after the incident and confirmed the casualties. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh for the next of kin of those who died in the incident.

According to him, seven patients died inside the ICU, while three others succumbed while being shifted to other wards during the rescue operation.

Majhi added that at least 11 hospital staff suffered burn injuries during evacuation of patients to safety.

Several patients were evacuated and moved to safer wards as firefighters and hospital staff rushed to bring the blaze under control.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each person who died in the fire at the Trauma Care ICU of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, while those injured in the incident will receive Rs 50,000 as financial assistance.

Officials said 23 employees of SCB Medical College and Hospital who were involved in the rescue effort were hospitalised after suffering health complications, including smoke inhalation.

According to officials, the fire broke out between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. in the Trauma Care ICU, where critically ill patients were undergoing treatment.

Multiple fire engines were rushed to the hospital, and emergency teams worked to control the blaze and evacuate patients. Hospital staff sustained burn injuries while rescuing patients from the unit.

In total, 23 patients were shifted to other departments and wards as part of the emergency evacuation.

Following the incident, Majhi ordered a judicial probe into the fire and assured strict action against anyone found responsible.
