Restrictions and communication blockade imposed after the death of pro-Pakistan separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani continued for the second consecutive day across the Kashmir Valley on Friday.

All major roads were barricaded and police and paramilitary deployed. No major gathering in remembrance of Geelani, especially after the Friday prayers, was permitted. Such gatherings have in the past led to anti-government demonstrations and stone pelting.

The administration also did not allow Friday prayers in some major masjids in the valley, including Jama Masjid, Hazratbal and Hyderpora masjid, where Geelani’s body was buried. Funeral prayers in absentia were held in some of the mosques as the administration didn't allow anybody to attend his last rites.

Board and university exams were postponed and train services suspended as well. Police chief Dilbag Singh said that the situation was under control. "Not even one incident occurred in the last two days. People cooperated, security forces are working with great restraint," Singh told reporters in Baramullah.
