Covid cases in India rise to 4-month high. These states have highest number of active cases

India reported over 800 covid cases in last 24 hours, according to the latest government data. This is the highest single-day case in over four months. With 843 fresh infections, the total number of active cases in India rose to 5,839. Jharkhand and Maharashtra reported one death each. The health ministry website showed 476 recoveries in 24 hours. 1,02,591 covid tests were conducted in past 24 hours.

Among the states Delhi had 148 active covid cases, Gujarat 521, Karnataka 584, Kerala 1665, Maharashtra 1029, Tamil Nadu 304 and Telangana 268. Amid rise in Covid cases, the central government had this week asked six states to take measures to contain the virus. According to the ministry's website, 220.64 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka were asked to follow a risk assessment-based approach to prevent and contain the spread of COVID-19 infections. "There are a few states which are reporting higher numbers of cases indicating possible localised spread of infection," Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has said in a letter to these states.


The centre advised these states to examine the situation of COVID-19 at micro-level and maintain focus on implementation of necessary measures for prompt and effective management of the disease, duly ensuring effective compliance with various advisories issued by the Ministry of Health.

The Covid-19 pandemic could settle down this year to a point where it poses a threat similar to flu, the World Health Organization said recently. "I think we're coming to that point where we can look at Covid-19 in the same way we look at seasonal influenza," WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan told a press conference.

"A threat to health, a virus that will continue to kill. But a virus that is not disrupting our society or disrupting our hospital systems."
