One Covid-19 positive case of Delta Plus variant has been found in Mysuru district. The patient has been isolated and under watch, health & medical education minister K Sudhakar said on Wednesday, as the state steps up its vaccination campaign to cover a maximum number of people before a third wave.

The infected person in Mysuru has been asymptomatic, and none of the patient’s primary and secondary contacts has contracted the virus, the minister told reporters.

“It is a good sign that it has not spread to others who came in contact with the infected person. We have taken a lot of precaution after Maharashtra reported about 30 cases of Delta Plus variant,” Sudhakar said.

The government, the minister said, was setting up six exclusive labs to do genomic sequencing of the coronavirus to keep a steady watch for new variants.

The health authorities are conducting about 1.4 lakh Covid tests daily and picking up 5% of random samples for genomic sequencing in all districts as part of a surveillance for new mutants such as Delta Plus.

The health minister said experts have not said so far that the vaccines being given in India was not an antidote to the Delta Plus variant. “Our vaccine will deal with even variants. Very few people have got the infection after taking two doses, and even fewer people went to ICUs. So, it is evident that vaccination is the only way forward,” Sudhakar said.
