Court orders private firm to refund woman Rs 1 lakh for wedding cancellation due to Covid-19

A Delhi court has ordered a private firm to refund a woman Rs 1 lakh plus 9% interest for a cancelled wedding booking during Covid 19 pandemic.

As per a report of the Times of India, Sanjana Chugh booked a banquet hall in 2021 for her daughter’s 2022 wedding. The wedding was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. The firm, located in Mayapuri Industrial Area Phase-I, did not return the money despite Chugh’s requests.

The Senior Civil Judge cum Rent Controller (West) ruled in Chugh’s favor on January 7. The court said Chugh provided enough evidence to support her claim. The firm did not appear in court or respond to a legal notice. The court considered this an admission of guilt. The judge confirmed the legal notice was delivered, citing postal receipts and tracking information.


“The defendant has chosen to remain absent during the entire course of proceedings and henceforth, he neither cross-examined the plaintiff's witness nor led any evidence. Hence, the averments made by the plaintiff remain unchallenged and unrebutted.”

The court also confirmed the lawsuit was filed within the allowed timeframe and jurisdiction. The judge ordered the firm to pay the refund and interest from the date the lawsuit was filed. Chugh was also awarded legal costs.
