The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ruled in favor of a man who experienced an accident due to a fault in his Hyundai i10 car. The commission has directed Hyundai to pay Rs 2 lakh in compensation to the complainant, P R Meena, a TOI report stated.

Meena purchased the car in September 2009 and within a month, the rear tyre and rim got detached, leading to the accident. At the time of the incident, the car had only covered a distance of 6,200 km and was being driven at a speed of 65 km per hour.

The court, consisting of Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal (President) and Pinki (Member Judicial), acknowledged the inconvenience and distress faced by Meena due to the recurring issues with the vehicle since its purchase. They stated that no new vehicle owner expects to visit a service station frequently for repairs, even if they are minor.

Hyundai argued that the accident occurred due to Meena's rough and negligent driving, denying any manufacturing defects in the car. However, the court noted that the car had defects within the first month of purchase and experienced issues after a mere 6,248 km of running, indicating poor workmanship.

The court emphasized that when a brand new car causes trouble shortly after purchase, it leaves the consumer dissatisfied. They recognized the mental agony Meena went through in taking the new car to the workshop for repairs.

Previously, in 2015, a district commission had found Hyundai guilty of poor workmanship in the case and awarded Meena a compensation of Rs 80,000. However, unsatisfied with this amount, Meena approached the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for further resolution.
