Meanwhile, in Assam, there was hardly any protest against the Waqf Amendment Act, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. "Despite having nearly 40% Muslim population, Assam has remained peaceful today except isolated protests in three places involving not more than 150 participants...," he wrote on X.
Speaking to reporters later, Sarma said: "We had an intelligence input five days back that there might be protests after Friday namaz. Accordingly, police reached out to minority leaders. Following this outreach there was hardly any protest."
In Tripura, the rally in Kailashahar was led by a local Congress leader. "Someone threw slippers at the rally, following which there was scuffle between the police and protesters," a senior police official said.
In the Northeast, Manipur has witnessed massive protests since the passing of the Waqf Amendment Bill. A mob set the house of BJP Minority Morcha state president Md Asker Ali on fire for supporting the Act.
