College student shot at in Manipur, shooter held

Police said that Takhellambam Deepu Singh allegedly shot at and injured Ahanthem Ritesh Kumar following an altercation at Uripok Khoisnam Leikai areas under Imphal police station.

A college student was shot in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Monday.

Police said that Takhellambam Deepu Singh allegedly shot at and injured Ahanthem Ritesh Kumar following an altercation at Uripok Khoisnam Leikai areas under Imphal police station.

Kumar suffered bullet injury on his chin. He was shifted to the hospital.


A senior police officer said that police are probing the incident.

The Manipur high court in March had directed to submit the recommendation of inclusion of Meitei (Meetei) community to Scheduled Tribes (ST) list to the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry, Government of India by May 29.

This has snowballed into major controversy with thousands of people on May 3 turned up for the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ called by a student body in all the ten hill districts of Manipur to oppose the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the ST category.There was large scale violence.

Manipur police has stated that as many as 175 people were killed, 1,108 others injured while 32 are missing in the ongoing ethnic strife which started on May 3.
