As Coimbatore continues to be a Covid hotspot, with cases in the district being the highest in Tamil Nadu, there are increasing concerns about the availability of ICU beds and over the health infrastructure there.

According to Wednesday's media bulletin, Coimbatore had 255 oxygen beds, 926 non-oxygen beds and two ICU beds vacant. However, several people ET spoke to said while there might be beds available in hospitals, it was not easy to get admission. Getting beds in private hospitals is especially difficult and they often demand large deposits and charge steep rates for treatment, alleged some of them.

"I have had such a tough time trying to get my mother a bed," said A Gobinath, whose mother is currently recovering in the Coimbatore Medical College hospital. "We tried in private hospitals and they would agree in the beginning until they saw her CT score and realised that she was vulnerable and would then deny admission.”
