Mumbai police had barricaded the historic August Kranti Maidan and had deployed police personnel to prevent protestors from trooping into it. More than a 100 protestors were detained a kilometre before at Nana chowk. Protestors however protested on the ground squatting and holding other protestors to prevent them from being picked into the vans.

Students and some senior citizens had tried to march to the ground shouting slogans seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as well as shouting slogans against the government and the BJP.
Tushar Gandhi was detained at Bandra while he was leaving for the venue and he was taken to the DN Nagar police station, in solidarity with Gandhi, Aaditya Thackeray and UBT MP Sanjay Raut went to the DN Nagar police station to question the police on the grounds for Tushar Gandhi's detention.
Actor Imran Khan who came to the venue to lend his support questioned the police action.
