CJP accuses Delhi Police of 'laying siege' to Jantar Mantar, demands immediate end to restrictions

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday accused the Delhi Police of creating an "atmosphere of fear and siege" around Jantar Mantar, alleging that officers were unlawfully detaining citizens, preventing supporters from reaching the protest site and blocking the movement of food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies.

In an 'important statement', the party demanded that the Delhi Police "immediately cease and desist" from detaining or intimidating people attempting to join the protest and allow unhindered access to volunteers, lawyers, journalists, family members and medical personnel.

The statement comes hours before a fresh round of talks between CJP leaders and the Centre, following Friday's nearly two-hour meeting with Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. While the government indicated "in-principle" agreement on providing Rs 1 crore compensation to families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the NEET-UG controversy and withdrawing FIRs against peaceful protesters, the two sides remain divided over the CJP's principal demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Ahead of the meeting, CJP leaders said they expect written confirmation on the government's assurances regarding compensation and legal protection, while seeking a clear "yes or no" on Pradhan's resignation. The party has maintained that the agitation at Jantar Mantar will continue until the minister steps down.

In its latest statement shared by CJP Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das, the youth-led party alleged that people were being detained merely for attempting to reach Jantar Mantar, volunteers carrying food were being stopped, and drinking water, medicines and sanitation supplies were being prevented from reaching protesters.

Calling Jantar Mantar "India's designated space for democratic dissent", the party said those gathered at the site were peacefully exercising their constitutional rights and were "not criminals" or "enemies of the State".

The CJP also urged the Delhi Police Commissioner to direct officers to immediately end the alleged restrictions, ensure uninterrupted access to essential supplies and refrain from creating what it described as an atmosphere of fear around the protest site.

"The Constitution belongs to the people. Jantar Mantar belongs to the people. The police exist to protect both—not to lay siege to either," the party said.
