Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Thursday put in place a faster communication system from courts to jails to facilitate the immediate release of prisoners. In several instances, release of convicts has been delayed as it took several days for jails to receive the formal order from a court.

The SC had taken cognisance of the problem and set out to address it after CJI wondered why in the age of information technology revolution the pace of delivery of orders moved at a pace reminiscent of an age when pigeons were used to deliver letters.

The new system known as Fast and Secured Transmission of Electronic Records will enable transmission of all interim orders, bail orders etc., to local authorities for immediate implementation.

The orders would be authenticated by court officers too. The new system will give no discretion for police or executive to delay implementing a court order. Police often have cited 'lack of availability of authenticated orders' to detain prisoners. Among those who have suffered include political dissidents, free speech activists, anti-CAA protestors and even film star Sanjay Dutt.
