Three civilians were killed and seven others injured in a suspected terrorist attack in Upper Dangri village of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two "armed men" attacked "three houses, separated at around 50 metre from each other". According to police sources, at least 10 persons received bullet injuries. The injured were immediately shifted to the Government Medical College hospital in Rajouri, where three of them succumbed to injuries. Doctors said that four more were critically injured.

J&K Police and Army have launched a search operation to nab the attackers. "We are ascertaining details," Mukesh Singh, additional director general of police in Jammu, told reporters.

The three persons killed in the attack have been identified as Deepak Kumar (23), Satish Kumar (45), and Preetam Lal (56). The injured are Shiv Pal (32), Pawan Kumar (38), Rohit Pandit (35), Saroj Bala (35), Sushil Kumar (40), Shub Sharma (20) and a 17-year-old girl.

"Several people here own guns, so we thought it was a celebratory firing on the New Year. But when we reached the spot, we saw that people in at least three houses had received bullet injuries and it seemed like a planned attack," said a villager.

J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina termed the attack a cowardly attack by the 'Pakistani terrorists' and said the attackers would be found and killed soon. "This is an inhuman dastardly act by the Pakistani terrorists and it would be avenged," said Raina.
