A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan tragically died by suicide at Surat International Airport on Friday. The incident occurred within the airport's washroom where the jawan, identified as Kisan Singh, 32, a native of Jaipur, inflicted a gunshot wound to his stomach.

Despite being promptly transported to a private hospital, medical professionals pronounced him deceased.

"He was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors declared him dead," confirmed NV Bharwad, inspector of Dumas police station.

This incident comes on the heels of a recent announcement from the CISF regarding a significant decline in suicides within the force. The force reported a 40% decrease in suicides from 25 cases in 2023 to 15 in 2024.

However, the issue of mental health within the paramilitary forces remains a serious concern. Since 2020, a total of 730 suicides have been reported across various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Assam Rifles, and the National Security Guard (NSG), with the CISF accounting for 105 of these cases.

The suicide rate within the CISF, which peaked at 18.1 per lakh personnel in 2022, has shown a gradual decline, reaching 16.9 per lakh in 2023 and further decreasing to 9.8 per lakh in 2024.
