The Centre on Sunday notified the appointment of four chief justices of high courts.

Justice Sonia G Gokani, a judge of the Gujarat High Court, has been appointed as the chief justice of Gujarat High Court. Her elevation was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium last week.

Justice Sandeep Mehta, judge at the Rajasthan High Court, has been appointed chief justice of the Gauhati High Court.


Justice Jaswant Singh, a judge in Orissa High Court, has been appointed chief justice of Tripura High Court and Justice N Kotiswar Singh, judge at the Gauhati High Court, has been appointed chief justice of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh.

A notification in this regard was issued by the ministry of law and justice on Sunday.

"As per the relevant provisions under the Constitution of India, the following judges are appointed as chief justices of different high courts. I extend best wishes to all of them!," law and justice minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted.

Recently, the ministry of law and justice cleared the elevation of Justice Gokani as the acting chief justice of the Gujarat High Court. Justice Gokani would be the first woman to head the Gujarat High Court.
