Heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Fengal continue to impact Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, forcing the closure of schools and colleges across several districts.

Chennai district collector has declared a holiday for schools on Friday, Times of India reported.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts for several coastal regions, warning of possible flooding and advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.


Cyclone Fengal: School Closed, Rains disrupts life in Tamil Nadu

Rain-related incidents, including structural damage and flooding, have been reported across Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Fengal continues to bring heavy rainfall to the region. In Tiruvarur district, an old house collapsed in Tarangampadi, while the wall of a Dharga's tank gave way at Jambuvanodai.

Uprooted trees have fallen onto electricity poles, leading to power outages in several areas, while many localities remain inundated due to waterlogging.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported very heavy rainfall in key regions, with Nagapattinam receiving 19 cm and Chennai recording 13 cm of rainfall between 8:30 am on November 26 and 8:30 am the next day.

The rainfall has been widespread, with heavy showers concentrated in the delta regions, while the rest of the state experienced mild to moderate rainfall.

To manage the impact of the heavy rains, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and state emergency units have been deployed in delta districts and Chennai. Several districts, including Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, declared November 27 a holiday for schools and colleges.

Meanwhile, in Chennai, Chengalpet, Ariyalur, and Kanchipuram, holidays were announced for schools only.

As of the IMD's latest update, the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal was located 370 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 550 km south-southeast of Chennai. The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm, with forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Pudukkottai in the coming days.
