The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert, forecasting light to moderate rain across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, along with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated spots. Here are the key updates on the situation:

Heavy Rainfall in Specific Districts

The IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rain in certain areas, with extremely heavy downpours expected in Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi districts.

Widespread Impact

Several other districts, including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Puducherry, are likely to witness heavy rain at isolated places.

Moderate Rainfall Expected

Isolated heavy rain is also forecasted for Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Dindigul, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore districts.

Fishermen Advisory

The IMD has issued a warning to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing into certain coastal areas, including Sri Lanka’s coast, the Gulf of Mannar, the Bay of Bengal, and the Kerala coast, between December 12 and 16, due to adverse weather conditions.

Weather for the Coming Days

On Saturday, light to moderate rainfall is expected in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with heavy rain likely in districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi.

Low-Pressure System Updates

According to Deputy Director General Balachandran from the Chennai Meteorological Department, a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has remained stagnant near the Gulf of Mannar. While this system is expected to weaken, the North-East monsoon remains vigorous across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Rainfall in the Last 24 Hours

Over the past 24 hours, four locations recorded very heavy rainfall, and 72 places experienced heavy rainfall, highlighting the intensity of the ongoing monsoon season.

School Closures Announced

As a precautionary measure, schools in 11 districts, including Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur, have been closed.

Yellow Alert Issued

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for several districts, indicating moderate rainfall with light thunderstorms in regions such as Vellore, Perambur, Salem, Namakkal, Sivaganga, Madurai, and Dindigul.
